Student Spotlights – September 2026

Auburn City Schools’ Child Nutrition Program gathered for orientation and professional development in preparation for the new school year. Chef Bettina Applewhite of Bites with Applewhite and her assistant, Tia Dickerson, traveled from Baltimore to lead the day’s training. Team members explored creative ways to craft flavorful, nutritious meals, including globally inspired bowls, signature sauces, food-allergy awareness, and effective service strategies, all aimed at providing an exceptional dining experience for ACS students. During a morning break, DMS PE Coach, Jeramiya Kitchens, helped everyone trade their kitchen steps for dance steps by teaching the “Boots on the Ground” line dance! Thank you again to Chef Bettina, Tia, and Coach Kitchens for sharing their expertise today.

East Samford School is celebrating its 10th anniversary this school year with the theme “Survivor 10!” To kick off this milestone year, ESS welcomed a very special guest speaker: Survivor: Tocantins contestant and former J.F. Drake Middle School Principal, Debbie Beebe. Drawing connections between her experiences as an educator and Survivor castaway, Beebe shared how adaptability, teamwork, perseverance, and strategic thinking are essential not only for overcoming challenges but also for providing students with the best possible education. She challenged teachers to “outwit, outplay, and outlast” by working together, responding to students’ individual needs, and remaining committed to helping every learner thrive throughout the school year. Here’s to a memorable 10th year filled with teamwork, determination, and spirit at ESS!

Approximately 150 coaches representing sports across Auburn City Schools came together for the district’s annual Coaches Orientation. This event is an opportunity to prepare and reaffirm the impact coaches can make in the lives of student-athletes beyond wins and losses. Keynote speaker, Patrick Keim, emphasized the lasting influence coaches have in developing character, leadership, discipline, and confidence. ACS Superintendent Dr. Cristen Herring provided updates on coaching stipends, while Assistant Superintendent Dr. Pete Forster shared important business and facility updates. Coaches also had an opportunity to connect with visiting apparel representatives. The gathering followed a remarkable 2025–2026 athletic year in which Auburn High School captured five state championships, earned three state runner-up finishes, and received the AHSAA Sportsmanship Award, which is a statewide honor recognizing schools that complete an entire athletic year without fines or participant ejections. A special thank-you to ACS Director of Athletics James Slaton and his staff for leading and supporting our coaches while providing this valuable opportunity to come together ahead of the new school year. Here’s to another year of competing with excellence and making a lasting impact!

The smiles were big, and the excitement was everywhere as we officially welcomed students back for the 2026–2027 school year! From our youngest learners beginning their journey in kindergarten to our seniors starting their final year, today was special across all 14 schools. Our administrators, teachers, coaches, aides, and support staff are back to doing what they do best by creating opportunities for every student. It was about first-day photos, new friendships, and warm welcomes. Most importantly, it was about celebrating the community that makes ACS such a special place. We hope everyone has a wonderful school year.

The future of Auburn High School Debate is already taking shape. Auburn High School proudly hosted a Debate Camp for 32 Auburn students entering grades 6-9, introducing the next generation of communicators to the exciting world of competitive debate. Even more impressive, the camp was led by members of the Auburn High School Varsity Debate Team, who shared their knowledge, encouraged confidence, and served as outstanding mentors for our younger students. Debate helps students build critical thinking, public speaking, research, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. By introducing these opportunities at an early age, students gain confidence in expressing their ideas, respectfully considering different perspectives, and becoming thoughtful leaders. A special thank you to Auburn High School Debate Coach Donna Yeager for her dedication to growing one of Auburn City Schools’ premier academic programs and inspiring students to find their voices through the power of debate. Great job to our varsity debaters for investing in the next generation of Tigers!

With family members in attendance, Auburn High School celebrated six students as they proudly crossed the stage to receive their diplomas, marking years of hard work and determination. Earning a high school diploma is a tremendous accomplishment that opens the door to exciting new opportunities and lifelong success. On behalf of Auburn City Schools, congratulations to our 2026 Summer Graduates. We are incredibly proud of all you have achieved and wish you nothing but the very best as you begin the next step in your life’s journey. Once a Tiger, always a Tiger!

What an incredible night going before the Lord in prayer and worship before a new year! We are confident that the Lord is going to do some incredible things in the lives of our students and staff at LSA this year!

As the countdown to the first day of school came to an end, ACS was busy preparing for an incredible 2026-2027 school year! Teachers and staff participated in professional development, orientations, training, and opportunities to connect through fellowship and shared meals. The goal in the days leading up to a new school year was to ensure students have the very best start. A special thank you to the Parent-Teacher Organizations (PTOs) at each school for your generous support, encouragement, and hospitality throughout the week. The anticipation for our first day was building as students met their teachers and saw a glimpse of what’s ahead.

We’re Back! Congratulations on a great first day of school on Academy Drive!

Auburn City Schools’ Transportation Department welcomed its bus drivers for orientation and training as they prepared to transport students throughout the 2026–2027 school year safely. Assistant Superintendent, Dr. Pete Forster, opened the meeting, emphasizing the important role our drivers play in supporting students and families. Often the first ACS team members to greet students in the morning and the last to see them safely home in the afternoon, our bus drivers help set the tone for each school day through their care and commitment.

Our new teachers had a chance to meet with our administration and get ready for an incredible year ahead!

Our new Upper School Warriors spent the afternoon on campus at our New Student Orientation! We are so excited to have them join the LSA family!

Auburn High School student ambassadors Eithar Omer and William Ellard represented Auburn City Schools with distinction through two of the nation’s most prestigious youth leadership programs. Following outstanding performances at Alabama Girls State and Alabama Boys State, Eithar and William were selected to represent Alabama at Girls Nation and Boys Nation in Washington, D.C. These premier weeklong leadership programs, sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary and The American Legion, provide high school students with an immersive look at the federal government through a simulated congressional experience. Each year, only two delegates from every state’s Girls State and Boys State programs are selected to attend, making this an extraordinary honor. William was elected Governor of Alabama Boys State before advancing to Boys Nation, where he represented Alabama as a U.S. Senator and managed the campaign for the winning vice-presidential ticket. Eithar was elected Lieutenant Governor of Alabama Girls State before being selected as one of Alabama’s two delegates to Girls Nation. Please join us in congratulating William and Eithar on these impressive accomplishments, as their commitment to civic engagement exemplifies the best of Auburn!

Auburn City Schools was proud to join the United Way of Lee County’s Annual Campaign Kickoff at the East Alabama Food Bank, where volunteers came together to package 50,000 meals for families in need across our community. Representing ACS were Germany Leonard, Joy Barber, and Sheryl Smith, who invested their sweat equity alongside community partners to help fight food insecurity and make a meaningful difference for local families. Together, we’re strengthening our community for the local good!

The first day of school was a great day! We were so happy to welcome back all of our students. It’s going to be an amazing year in the Opelika City Schools!

Auburn City Schools proudly welcomed 78 new teachers during the annual New Teacher Breakfast, marking the beginning of an exciting journey toward the 2026-2027 school year. Throughout the morning, each of the 14 schools introduced their newest team members, giving everyone in the room the opportunity to learn more about their backgrounds, where they earned their degrees, and the experiences they bring to the classroom. Every new teacher represents a new opportunity to shape the lives of students in Auburn. Among the educators new to ACS this year, Auburn High School graduates were well represented, with 10 total. Their stories are a powerful reminder of the lasting impact ACS has on students and the incredible educators who inspire them to return home to teach the next generation. ACS is grateful for the Board of Education, Mayor Ron Anders, City Manager Megan Crouch, Dr. Jeffrey Fairbrother, Dean of Auburn University’s College of Education, Chamber President Anna Hovey, and members of the Auburn City Council for joining us this morning and for their continued partnership and support of public education. A special thank you goes to Cary Woods Elementary School for serving as an outstanding host site, and to Drew Morgan, Betty Weeden, Lamarrius Anderson, and Susan Shonk for their exceptional coordination and hospitality in making today’s event a success. To our newest educators: We are excited to see the difference you will make in the lives of our students and community. Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead!

The next generation of student-athletes had the unique opportunity to learn from the very best at the annual Auburn High School Soccer Camp. Led by Boys Head Coach Ben McQueen and Girls Head Coach Shelby Wall, the varsity coaching staff, and AHS student-athletes, young players developed their skills while learning from one of Alabama’s premier soccer programs. Fresh off a remarkable season that saw both the Auburn High boys and girl’s teams capture the 2026 AHSAA Class 7A State Championship, varsity players shared their passion for the game by mentoring the future of the game. Every drill emphasized teamwork, confidence, and sportsmanship, highlighting for campers what it means to represent Auburn High with pride both on and off the pitch!

From learning the fundamentals to making new friends and creating new memories, campers are being introduced to the gridiron at the annual Auburn High School Football Youth Camp. Led by Head Coach Keith Etheredge, the varsity coaching staff, and AHS football players, campers received hands-on instruction while experiencing the teamwork, discipline, and tradition that define Auburn High Football. More than just a camp, this annual tradition allows future student-athletes to learn from the players they look up to and build confidence while strengthening the bonds that make ACS Athletics so successful. A special thank you to the Football program for investing their time and energy into making a positive impact on the next generation of Tigers!

Auburn City Schools is proud to announce Graham Ferguson as the new Head Coach of the Auburn High School Boys Golf Team. Already a familiar face on campus, Coach Ferguson has served Auburn High School since 2021 as a special education science teacher and varsity assistant linebackers coach, helping students succeed in the classroom and on the field. Since 2023, he has also led the Tigers’ junior varsity golf program, making this a natural next step as he takes the reins of the varsity team. A proud 2019 graduate of Auburn High, Coach Ferguson understands firsthand the tradition and excellence that define ACS Athletics. He earned his degree in Sports Management from Troy University, where he served as a student coach, and he is currently pursuing his master’s degree in special education at the University of West Alabama. During college, he also taught golf at Moore’s Mill Golf Club, further developing the instructional skills and passion he now brings to Auburn High’s golf program. One of six siblings, five of whom graduated from Auburn High School, Coach Ferguson’s roots in the Auburn community run deep, and his commitment to serving Auburn City Schools continues to grow. “Graham Ferguson is a tremendous fit to lead our boys golf program,” said Auburn City Schools Director of Athletics James Slaton. “As an Auburn High graduate, teacher, and coach for the past five years, Graham understands the tradition and expectations of Auburn Athletics. He is committed to our mission of developing champions in academics, athletics, and life, and we are excited about the future of Auburn High boys golf under his leadership.” Please join us in congratulating Coach Ferguson on this well-earned opportunity as he leads the next chapter of Auburn High School Boys Golf!

The Auburn City Schools Board of Education has named Dr. Pete Forster as the district’s new Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations. This appointment was made after the recent announcement of Dr. Dennis Veronese’s retirement, following his 25 years of service to students and families in Auburn. A lifelong educator and leader, Dr. Forster has 27 years of dedicated service with ACS, including 23 years in school administration and 20 years as a principal. Throughout his career, he has earned a reputation for thoughtful leadership, fiscal responsibility, strategic planning, and an unwavering commitment to students, staff, and families. In his new role, Dr. Forster will oversee the district’s business and operational functions, helping guide long-range planning, facilities, finance, and the continued growth of one of Alabama’s premier school systems. “Dr. Forster has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout his career in Auburn City Schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Cristen Herring. “His understanding of our district, his commitment to operational excellence, and his ability to strategically plan for the future make him the ideal person to serve as our Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations. Auburn City Schools hosted educators from across Alabama at Auburn High School for the Project Outreach Gulf Coast MERGE Conference. This special education conference brings together teachers, administrators, and advocates committed to creating more inclusive learning environments for every student. Through engaging speakers, collaborative breakout sessions, and practical resources, participants are gaining new ideas and strategies they can take back to their classrooms and schools. At ACS, we are honored to provide a place where educators can connect, collaborate, and continue growing in their mission to ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive. A special shout-out to John Wells Warren for showcasing his talent with his desk-bell renditions of The Pirates of the Caribbean main theme, the Auburn High School Alma Mater, and more, before the Auburn High School chapter of Project Outreach closed out the day with highlights of their efforts throughout the school year. Elementary educators from across Auburn City Schools spent time this summer sharpening their instructional skills through Brainspring Phonics First® professional learning led by nationally recognized literacy trainer Joe Seymore. Grounded in the Science of Reading, Phonics First equips teachers with research-based strategies to strengthen foundational literacy skills, helping students build confidence in fluency, spelling, and overall reading success. By investing in high-quality professional development, we’re ensuring our teachers have the tools they need to meet students where they are and help every child become a confident, capable reader. Great teaching starts with continuous learning, and when our teachers learn, our students thrive!

Congratulations to Auburn City Schools’ Child Nutrition Program Director, Dr. Ashley Powell, on being named 2026-2027 President of the School Nutrition Association! As president of the national organization representing more than 50,000 school nutrition professionals, Dr. Powell will help shape the future of school nutrition nationwide while continuing to lead Auburn City Schools’ outstanding Child Nutrition Program. From expanding access to free breakfast for all students to incorporating more locally sourced foods into our cafeterias, Dr. Powell’s leadership reflects a commitment to ensuring every student has access to nutritious, high-quality meals. We are incredibly proud to see one of our own serving at the national level. Congratulations, Dr. Powell!

Auburn City Schools is proud to celebrate Allison Etheredge, a sixth-grade math teacher at J.F. Drake Middle School, who recently represented the United States of America at the 24th International Conference of Korean Educators! Mrs. Etheredge was one of only eight participants selected from America to attend the conference, joining educators from 44 countries worldwide for an incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and grow. Throughout the conference, Mrs. Etheredge immersed herself in Korean language, culture, history, cuisine, and the future of education in South Korea. She participated in global networking forums, explored Korean-language education in the age of artificial intelligence, learned about innovative classroom tools and AI-powered teaching strategies, and took in cultural landmarks throughout Seoul and Incheon. From visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace, the National Museum of Korea, and the Jemulpo AI Convergence Education Center to engaging with other educators, Mrs. Etheredge returned with fresh ideas, new friendships, and a deeper understanding of how education continues to evolve. This experience provided Mrs. Etheredge with a perspective she can bring back to her students and fellow educators in ACS, helping support a thriving school community that prepares students for the future. Congratulations, Mrs. Etheredge, and thank you for representing ACS so well!

Opelika City Schools leadership team attended an administrative retreat to prepare for the upcoming school year. The group traveled to Storybook Farm on day one to learn more about the incredible services and programs offered to students. The group also had the honor of hearing from retired Army Lt. Gen. Ronald Burgess, Jr. The focus of the discussion from the OHS alum was leadership. Day two was spent at Spring Villa Lodge for additional planning and updates from administrators and the superintendent. The OCS tech team and Hyundai Motor Manufacturing surprised the group with a visit from Spot, the Boston Dynamics robot dog, to end the day. Many thanks to Storybook Farm, Spring Villa Lodge, and Scout Program Management for hosting the group and providing meals. We look forward to seeing all of our students and staff!

Our rising Kindergarten and First Grade students spent the week growing their confidence and strengthening foundational literacy skills during LSA Reading Camp. Through engaging small-group instruction, campers focused on reading, handwriting, phonemic awareness, and high-frequency words while participating in interactive lessons designed to prepare them for a successful school year. From practicing essential reading skills to discovering the joy of learning alongside new friends, these future Warriors are ready to turn the page on an exciting year ahead!

As summer came to a close, all OCS teachers and staff gathered at Opelika High School to kick off the new school year at Institute Day. Superintendent Dr. Kevin Davis welcomed everyone back and set expectations for the year. The highlight of the morning was guest speaker, comedian Dusty Slay! A special thank you to AuburnBank and Stone Martin Builders for sponsoring breakfast from The Flying Biscuit Cafe. We are ready for the 2026-27 school year and cannot wait to see all of our students.

Opelika City Schools welcomed our new teachers and provided them with two days of in depth training. They were treated to Chick Fil A breakfast and daily snacks from the Opelika Chamber and then breakfast the next morning from AEA and the Flying Biscuit. Huntington Bank sponsored the annual Back to School luncheon for the group and OCS administrators. We are excited about the new school year!

Our rising kindergarten students had a blast during LSA Sensory Camp, exploring a variety of sensory materials that sparked creativity, curiosity, and discovery. From creating colorful works of art to building, experimenting, and engaging in imaginative play, every activity encouraged fine motor development, problem-solving, and collaboration, all while helping campers feel confident and excited for their upcoming kindergarten adventure. We loved watching these future Warriors learn, explore, and grow together!

The Lee-Scott Academy Marching Band has been hard at work preparing for Friday nights at Band Camp!

What a great week at Perfect Gentleman. Our boys had a wonderful time learning practical etiquette skills, building confidence, and practicing what it means to be respectful, kind, and servant-hearted. We hope they leave encouraged and equipped to become the strong men God created them to be!

Our rising 1st graders are out of this world excited to begin another school year! They spent the week learning all about the year ahead, and even went on a scavenger hunt around campus!
